Natural Treatment For MS Is A Mixed Bag

A natural treatment for MS could be anything from meditation to limiting the amount of animal protein in the diet to spending more time exercising each day. There are several steps that can be taken to help manage the symptoms of this serious condition. Many are easy and inexpensive to implement.

Encephalomyelitis disseminate or disseminated sclerosis are two other names for Multiple Sclerosis. The autoimmune inflammatory disease effects the myelin sheaths of the brain and spine. The sheaths are damaged and myelin is lost. Scarring occurs. Women are effected more often than men. MS usually is diagnosed when a patient is in early adulthood.

Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis are primarily neurological but psychiatric symptoms could also be present. It comes on in different ways for different people afflicted. Attacks could be discrete which are relapsing or they could be progressive. In this case, they accumulate over the course. Symptoms may completely disappear between attacks. Neurological issues that are permanent do occur as the disease progresses.

French neurologist, Jean Martin Charcot was the one to recognize and officially name the condition in 1868. Several scientists and doctors before Charcot did study various aspects of the disease but did not give it a name or specific definition as Charcot did. Scientists and doctors after him continued his work in an effort to understand the disease. It has proved to be a complex and difficult problem. It was not until the 1990s that effective medications were introduced.

MS is not truly understood. It is a baffling conditions in many ways. A cause has not been definitively identified, There is no cure. The medications that are available often have adverse side effects. Alternative treatments are a way for patients to take some control of their condition and make changes in their daily habits in the hopes of finding relief. People often turn to natural treatments for MS in addition to or instead of traditional treatments. Dietary modifications are an important part of the natural treatment methods. Increasing intake of fruits and vegetables and decreasing protein is important. Plant based protein is preferable to animal protein. Consuming organic is another popular step to take.

Supplementation is another natural treatment method. Suggested are a daily antioxidant and multivitamin as well as a B-50 complex vitamin. Another supplement to include is a coenzyme. Other habits may also be employed such as light exercise and meditation. Many have also added flaxseeds and other superfoods to their diets.

Many factors dictate the prognosis for a person with MS including gender, age, and symptoms at onset. Life expectancy is effected with those afflicted having a life expectancy 5 to 10 years shorter than those without the disease. Most lose their mobility prior to death however 90% still have the ability to walk ten years after onset.

Every natural treatment for MS is one part of how an afflicted person deals with their condition. Multiple Sclerosis is highly individualized. Effective treatments will also be highly individualized.
